POSITION SUMMARY
This position is primarily responsible for the performance of athletic field setups, routine ballfield maintenance, and tournament support. Field vicinity grounds related tasks such as cleaning dugout and bleacher areas, litter control and weed control in and around each ball field will also be expected. Additional responsibilities for this position will include special event support, custodial tasks related to general park cleanliness and supervision of seasonal staff. This position reports to the Athletic Field Maintenance Supervisor. 

ESSENTIAL POSITION DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES
The schedule for this position will be Wednesday – Sunday during peak sports season. The schedule may be adjusted to Monday-Friday in the offseason when tournaments and sporting events are not taking place. The candidate must have the ability to work extended hours for weather-related events and other special events. Must be able to work independently without direct supervision, as well as in a team environment to safely and productively complete tasks. The ability to exercise initiative, good judgement, and time management while remaining productive is essential. Work assignments will generally fall within operational areas described for this position, but the ability to support park needs in other areas will be required at times. Must be able to organize and direct crews of 1-8 part-time employees to ensure assignments are completed safely and efficiently. Supervisory responsibilities include assisting in hiring, training, supervising and evaluating part-time staff. Additional responsibilities include facilitating daily task, identifying areas of improvement, addressing inquiries and complaints, and growing an inclusive, positive work environment Athletic Field Maintenance: Assist and lead field builds for various sports and leagues such as baseball/softball, soccer, lacrosse, and others as needed. The ability to accurately measure and line fields is crucial in field building. Routine and preventative field maintenance tasks include line painting, edging, mound and batter’s box repairs, infield dirt maintenance, mowing, netting repairs, synthetic turf grooming and repairs, identifying and correcting field safety issues, temporary fence setup, base anchor installations/repairs and more. Game preparation tasks include accurately measuring and setting up ball fields for different age groups, move and place portable pitching mounds and bases, moving soccer goals and corner flags, painting lines and cleaning up areas of play. Tournament and Sporting Event Support: This position will be responsible, with the assistance of part-time staff, for ensuring quality playing surfaces and park cleanliness during most weekend sporting events and tournaments. Likely tasks include working with tournament directors on the day of play to address any playing field or maintenance needs that may arise. Additional responsibilities include ensuring clean and operational bathroom facilities, waste removal from garbage receptacles, litter cleanup and general park cleanliness. Labor and Equipment Operation: Operation of heavy equipment, including but not limited to maintenance carts, synthetic turf groomers, 3-wheel infield groomers, skid steer, toolcat, dump truck, mowers, trucks with trailers, tractors with implements, forklift. Operation of small equipment, including but not limited to powerbrush groomers, line painters, sod cutter, weed trimmer, edgers, blowers, vacuums and misc. hand tools. Routine equipment maintenance The ability to perform labor intensive tasks and work in all types of weather conditions. Assist in planning, budgeting, and purchasing of supplies as needed. 

MINIMUM QUALFICATIONS EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES
Bachelor or Associate degree in Sports Turf Management, Agronomy, Sport Management, a related field OR 3 years of full-time paid experience related to the position. Possession of a valid State of Illinois driver’s license or other state equivalent. State of Illinois Public Pesticide Operator’s license in the category of Turf, preferred at time of hire but required within 6 months of employment. 

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILTIES
A basic to intermediate knowledge of the principles, terms, techniques and procedures associated with the design, care and maintenance of athletic fields. The ability to perform basic to intermediate math calculations to perform field builds. The ability to motivate and guide others in the safe and productive performance of tasks associated with the maintenance of City grounds and landscapes. Possess the knowledge and ability to operate equipment, motor vehicles and both power and hand tools effectively and safely. Have the ability and aptitude to learn and operate new equipment. The ability to use a computer, computer hardware and common software applications. The ability to understand and comply with workplace rules and policies. Must be able to work and cooperate with others, resolve problems, and possess a positive attitude while contributing to and maintaining a safe, productive, and respectful work environment. Must always represent the department in a positive and professional manner and serve as a reliable source of information about department programs, park maintenance operations, and park rules and regulations. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The ability to perform physical activities such as standing or walking for extended periods, frequent and repeated bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, climbing of ladders, or working aloft from an aerial lift device/truck. The ability to lift up to 100lbs unassisted. The ability to push, pull, squat and perform repetitive movements on a regular basis. 

This is an exempt position. Starting Rate is $24.61/hour Full Benefits - Health/Vision/Dental/Life Insurances, IMRF (Pension), Vacation, Sick, and Personal Days.
