Job Title:  Recreation Specialist – Aquatics

Department:  Parks and Recreation

Reports to:  Aquatic Supervisor 

Salary Range:  $52,673 to $70,011

 Summary:  Responsible for performing work and coordinating the daily operations and management of an aquatic facility within a recreational complex.  Work is performed under the general supervision of the Aquatics Supervisor and includes the supervision of lifeguards, head lifeguards, pool managers and programming staff.  Must have knowledge of pool operations and mechanical systems.  Acts in a dependable manner by meeting schedules and deadlines, adhering to policies and procedures, and maintaining a good attendance/tardiness record. Work is reviewed through conferences, observation of results achieved, and conformance to established policies, goals, and objectives of the Department of Parks and Recreation.     Plans and implements aquatic programs, activities, and special events.  Designs new programs and revises existing activities as needed. 

    Daily supervision of facility activities includes the following:  answers phones, responds to questions and provides information, resolves discrepancies, provides technical assistance to the public and community organizations, enforces regulations and rules to prevent disruptions.  

    Plans, assigns, supervises, and coordinates part time aquatic staff.

    Enforces pool safety rules and regulations.

    Serves as a role model to subordinates and effectively hires, trains, coaches, disciplines and develops subordinates.  Achieves desired results through effective leadership and appropriate influence, and adheres to established policies and procedures.

    Responsible for assisting in the development and monitoring the aquatics department budget.

    Directly supervises the swim lesson program including purchases of private swim lesson packages (daily report) scheduling/re-scheduling and communication about swim lesson policies and seasonal availability

    Prepares aquatic material for the recreation brochure.

    Maintain inventory supplies including uniforms, safety equipment and public aquatic equipment.

    Conducts program evaluations to determine effectiveness and relevance of current programs.

    Assists in the yearly evaluation of staff.

    Interprets policies and procedures to staff and the public.

    Conducts in-service training and part-time staff meetings with lifeguards and head lifeguards.

    Programs, plans and supervises year-round lifeguard classes and annual lifeguard review

    Participates in the regular rotation as Supervisor on Duty of The Lodge one day per week, approximately one weekend per month and rotating holidays.

    Performs related work as required.


Education and Experience Required

Bachelor’s degree in Parks, Recreation, Physical Education, Tourism, or other related field, plus two years of related work experience or other equivalent combination of education and experience.  Certified in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Instructor, Water Safety Instructor, First Aid, AFO or CPO, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer; or passage of certification within three months of hiring.  Certified Parks and Recreation Professional preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Pool facilities maintenance and operations of aquatic centers.

    Principles and practices of pool and personnel supervision.

    Computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook; and Desktop Publishing programs. 

    Recreation Software including CivicRec, Tyler Incode, When to Work 

Ability and skills to 

    Communicate effectively in interpreting policies and procedures, and in resolving conflicts or personnel problems.

    Demonstrate professional public relations skills, effective interpersonal and communication skills.

    Work days, evenings, and weekends.

    Supervise subordinates.

    Keep up to date with new trends in the field of Aquatics.

Language and Mathematical Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondences and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of diverse people. Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages

Work Environment

The indoor environment provides for a safe and healthy work environment and is smoke and drug free.  Occasionally, it may be wet and humid, as well as moderately loud.  The outdoor work environment may result in exposure to extreme weather conditions such as heat, cold, and humidity.
