POSITION SUMMARY
The Recreation Specialist is responsible for planning, implementing and supervising recreational programs and special events for The City of Des Peres. The perfect candidate enjoys bringing our community together through exciting special events. Responsible for youth programming, summer camps, senior programs and community educational classes, special events, summer concert series and Fall Fest. Duties include developing, implementing and evaluating programs, creating new events and programs, supervising/coaching/evaluating part-time staff, registering participants and collecting fees. Assists Recreation Supervisors in other departmental functions as needed. Provides extraordinary customer service, empowers the team, brings the community together, creates experiences worth repeating and strives for constant improvement.
Minimum Salary $56,031
Maximum Salary $78,443

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Program Coordination:
Plans and implements recreational programs, activities, and special events. Designs new recreational programs and revises existing activities as needed.
Staff Supervision and Training:
Plans, assigns, supervises, and coordinates part time staff and assists with hiring and recruiting.
Program Coordination:
Conducts program evaluations to determine effectiveness and relevance of current programs
Budget:
Responsible for developing and monitoring the department budget.
Program Marketing:
Assist with updates to the City website, ensuring timely and accurate information related to Parks & Recreation programs and events. Support the creation and execution of marketing programs to promote department activities and services.
Inventory:
Maintain inventory supplies including uniforms, safety equipment and public equipment.
Supervisor on Duty:
Participates in the regular rotation as Supervisor on Duty of The Lodge one day per week (Thursday evenings), approximately one weekend every six weeks and rotating holidays. The individual in this role is expected to contribute to the team's efforts by completing other related tasks as needed.

Knowledge and comprehension of community recreation and park programs including accepted standards, principles, concepts and related legislative mandates.
Principles and practices of personnel supervision.
Ability to collect, analyze, and use social data to inform decision making.
Computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook; and Desktop Publishing programs.
Communicate effectively in interpreting policies and procedures, and in resolving conflicts or personnel problems.
Demonstrate professional public relations skills, effective interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondences and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of diverse people. Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers,
Maintains harmony among workers and resolves grievances; performs or assists subordinates in performing duties; adjusts errors and complaints.
MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's Degree (Related Field)
1 year of previous relevant work experience is required
CERTIFICATIONS:
Certified in First Aid and CPR, or passage of certification within three months of hiring. CPRP preferred.

Microsoft Office, Civic Rec: Parks and Recreation Software, Incode Payroll Software, SharePoint Intranet
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Typically, the work is conducted in an office environment as well as outdoors. Occasionally, work is performed in adverse weather conditions.
May occasionally be exposed to uncomfortable temperatures, humidity, noise, chemicals/gases, contagious diseases, airborne particles/pathogens, and/or physical trauma.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Work requires the ability to sit, stand, walk for extended periods of time.
Work requires the ability to complete repetitive wrist, hand, and/or fine motor movement.
