PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The purpose of this position is to oversee the management of Sports Leagues, Sports Camps and athletic fields, volleyball court and gymnasium reservations for the City of Clayton.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

 

  • Delivers a safe and excellent customer service experience to the residents, members and patrons.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates policies and procedures, suggesting changes in current practices when necessary.
  • Directly oversee operations of Youth Sports leagues and Sports Camp programs. Interviews, hires, trains, supervises, schedules and evaluates part-time youth sports staff and contractors for sports camps.
  • Conducts regular staff meetings for youth sports staff to ensure clear communication of program changes or new policies. Conducts on-going training as necessary.
  • Responsible for training for new youth sports employees on operational procedures according to the Clayton Parks and Recreation and The Center of Clayton policies. Follows-up with all staff that are not following correct procedures for additional training and/or counseling.
  • Responsible for the management and supervision of rental permits for contractual use of facilities.
  • Responsible for establishing adult volunteer coaches for youth sports leagues within the community.  Conducts meetings to establish and discuss goals and objectives of the league, as well as rules and conduct of both players and coaches.
  • Responsible for development and implementation of reports including youth sports leagues and sports camp participation usage, etc. 
  • Submit, review and maintain information in the program brochure, website and in recreation software for Youth Sports leagues and Sports camps.
  • Assists in the development of the sports budget, specifically creates the part-time salaries budget for Youth Sports Leagues and Sports Camps and assists with other expense lines related to these programs and operations. Responsible for the fee comparisons and salary studies. Responsible for the tracking of expenses regarding Youth Sports Leagues and Sports Camps salaries and other expenses related to these programs.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of sports policies and procedures, suggesting changes in current practices when necessary.  Identifies current patron trends in youth sports and camp program participation.
  • Assists in the development of marketing and evaluation materials for the sports department.
  • Instruct programs as needed; fill in for shift workers when necessary. 
  • Assists in the supervision of The Center of Clayton by sharing in evening and weekend supervisor responsibilities; fills in for shift workers when necessary.
  • Assists in enhancing communication with Welcome Desk and departmental staff.
  • Assists with special events as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

One (1) year experience in parks and recreation, sports programming, and/or athletics facility management. 

Bachelor’s Degree in Parks & Recreation, Sport Management or a closely related field from an accredited institution or equivalent experience and education.  Master’s Degree preferred.

Certification in CPR/AED and First Aid required from American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or Health and Safety Institute within 3 months of hire.

              

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong computer skills a necessity; proficient in Microsoft programs including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of financial accounting procedures.
  • Positive attitude and ability to work independently, as well as a member of a team.
  • Ability to maintain simple records and prepare reports, manual or computerized.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize requests and projects.
  • Ability to work under tight time frames to meet target dates.
  • Ability to take control of situations in a responsible manner.
  • Ability to plan, organize, manage, direct, and evaluate the work of subordinate employees.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships with other employees, department heads and governmental       officials.
  • General knowledge of current office practices and procedures and knowledge of the operation of standard office equipment.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with other members of the staff, supervisor, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate in both written and verbal form.
  • Ability to develop, interpret and implement local policies and procedures; written instructions, general correspondence; Federal, State, and local regulations.

  • Ability to maintain discretion regarding business-related files, reports and conversations, within the provision of open records law and other applicable State and Federal Statutes and Regulations.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work the allocated hours of the position.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This is medium work requiring the exertion of 25 pounds of force frequently, up to 50 pounds of force seldom, and up to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The employee is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions including, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, dust/dirt, grease/oils, fumes, chemicals, insecticides, pesticides, herbicides, ammonia, fertilizers, insects, blood, possible blood borne pathogens, moving parts of machinery and extreme weather conditions both hot and cold.  Work is a combination of indoors and outdoors.
