Duties and Responsibilities / Essential Functions include all descriptions listed in the Parks Maintenance Worker and Parks Programming Assistant job descriptions, as well as the following. Other duties may be assigned. 

Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Parks and Recreation Department to include supervising staff, recreation programs, park land, and facilities. This position is responsible for assisting in establishing a yearly budget and operating the department within the confines of said budget. The Parks and Recreation Director will also host, provide administrative support, and research for the Parks Board and attend Board of Aldermen meetings. 

● Schedule, organize, direct, coordinate, evaluate, and directly supervise assigned staff. 

● Develop, plan, and implement long and short-term goals and objectives for the City in the area of parks and recreation. 

● Develop and implement policies and procedures for effective operations and maintenance. 

● Develop, prioritize and oversee parks and recreation programming and activities 

● Recommend changes in order to meet organizational needs, along with identifying new processes and alternatives to resolve problems or improve/enhance operations. 

● Develop standards for parks, sports fields, and playground equipment maintenance. Ensure parks are properly maintained using the most effective combination of City employees and contracts with outside vendors. Conduct inspections of parks, sports fields, and playgrounds to ensure safety and maintenance of all areas, along with determining needed repairs and/or upgrades. 

● Respond to inquiries from the public regarding various community services. Provide information or direct inquiries to appropriate department resources. 

● Meet with civic groups to present information regarding recreation opportunities and parks and recreation programming. 

● Develop, implement and oversee departmental budget, including equipment and *Essential Function capital improvement needs. Develop bid specifications for equipment and make recommendations to City Administrator or Board of Aldermen. Review all department requisitions and receiving reports. 

● Serve as an advisor to the Parks & Recreation Board. Attend meetings and make recommendations. Incorporate Board policy into operations and communicate Board policies to employees and the public. 

● Prepare and/or complete various forms, reports, correspondence, charts, budget documents, memos, policies and procedures, performance appraisals, purchase orders, bid documents, contracts, bills, resolutions, payroll reports, vehicle maintenance reports, or other documents. 

● Communicate with supervisors, City officials and employees, vendors, civic groups, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, resolve problems, or give/receive advice/direction. 

● Maintain a comprehensive and current knowledge of applicable policies, procedures, codes, regulations/ Conduct research and maintain an awareness of new issues, methods, equipment, trends and advances in the profession. Read professional literature, maintain professional affiliations, and participate in continuing education activities, conferences, workshops and training sessions as appropriate.


Salary: $60,000 - $65,000


FLSA Status: Exempt
