The City of Sedalia Parks & Recreation Department is seeking a Program Specialist to join our team.
Job Summary:
The Program Specialist plays a dual role by developing, implementing, and running programs, fostering relationships and enhancing community partnerships, and managing outreach activities with our community. The role supports Sedalia Parks and Recreation by fostering relationships, coordinating memberships, and delivering diverse, impactful programs. This position requires a high level of collaboration, creativity, and organizational skills to attract and retain members, expand community presence, and implement engaging recreational activities. The person in this position needs to be self-motivated, enthusiastic, and community-driven to take on this exciting role. This position requires someone equipped with a positive attitude and readiness to be a team player.
Job Scope:
The purpose of this position is to increase awareness, use, and understanding of the department through marketing, advertising, special events, and public relations strategies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Program Management:
- Oversee program operations for various demographics, including youth, adults, and special needs.
- Plan and budget for programs, monitor participation, and adjust offerings to meet community needs.
- Recruit, train, and supervise a diverse team of volunteers and staff for program success.
- Assists Marketing/Special Events Manager in the successful implementation of Special Events, as needed
- Collaborate with colleagues to design, market, and implement engaging events that promote a healthy lifestyle and community engagement.
- Cross-Functional Responsibilities:
- Assist with special events planning, including member and volunteer appreciation initiatives.
- Coordinate with the Marketing/Special Events Manager to align strategies and resources.
- Respond to emergencies, maintaining certifications in First Aid, CPR, and AED.
- In addition, this position will perform community outreach responsibilities, such as:
- Develop and maintain partnerships with local businesses, organizations, and individuals to boost parks and recreation visibility.
- Assist in managing sponsorship agreements with community partners and oversee a donor management system.
- Organize and attend outreach events, workshops, and community engagements.
- Maintain accurate records of program budgets and prepare reports.
Condition of Employment:
- Must successfully complete a pre-employment drug & alcohol test and agree to be subject to random drug screen throughout employment.
- Must pass a Background Criminal Investigation check.
- Must be willing and available to work early morning, morning, afternoons, evenings, weekends, and holiday shifts as scheduled by immediate supervisor.
- CPR/AED and standard First Aid certification required within 60 days of employment.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Strategic Communications, Hospitality, Public Relations, or related field; or two years relevant experience in outreach, program planning, and/or event coordination.
- Strong knowledge of marketing platforms, data entry, cash handling, and report generation.
- Proficient in written and verbal communication with excellent interpersonal skills across age groups.
- Knowledge of park and recreation practices and programs preferred.
- Valid driver’s license
- Proficient with Microsoft Office products and word processing, spreadsheet, and graphic design programs.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Working knowledge of data entry into the computer, and knowledge of telephone etiquette.
- Skill in handling cash transactions, operating cash register, and giving correct change.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to plan, organize and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.
- Friendly, enthusiastic, and positive attitude.
- Strong knowledge of social media and other basic marketing platforms.
- Detail oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects at a time.
Guidelines:
Guidelines include city and department policies and procedures, Health Department codes, and American Red Cross guidelines. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application
Principal Working Relationships:
Contacts are typically with co-workers, members of civic and community groups, day care providers, vendors, managers, instructors, maintenance workers, and the general public.
